Dear Members and Friends,
Happy Leap Year! I just couldn’t wait to send out the March Newsletter! We have so many exciting things coming up. First of all, March 15th through the 17th is the IRC Conference in Springfield: Literacy in the Land of Lincoln. Please let me know if you plan to attend. It would be great to see you at the conference! I know there are several Two Rivers members presenting this year. Good luck to all of you! Secondly, I would like to give a great big THANK YOU to those members who came over on February 19th and helped put together our Hall of Councils Display. Its going to be awesome! Keep sending me those pictures, so we can put them on the digital frame for the display. Another big THANK YOU to our executive board members, Kathleen Reynolds, Marilyn Cordes and Tamara Springer who helped pull together all the materials necessary to hopefully qualify our council for the distinctions of IRC and IRA Honor Council! I will keep you posted!
In the past month we were able to donate some books to an event at Donovan Schools and we gave $200 to the education students at Olivet Nazarene University, to help them with their housing at the IRC Conference. Additionally, our council gave $100 to the IRC’s International Literacy Project in Guatamala and $50 to the Viatorian Mission School in Belize (that will go to purchase books for the students there). We are so happy that through our members support of activities, we can give back to literacy education all over the world!
Our next big event is our Pampered Professional Event on April 5th from 5 to 7:30 p.m., at the Bourbonnais Public Library, White Oak Room. We will be having a wonderful opportunity for you, as IRC members, to take advantage of our resident grant exper and Region Five Director, Tamara Springer. She will be presenting tips and strategies for grant writing from 5 to 6 p.m. If you haven’t looked at the IRC grant opportunities, please visit www.illinoisreadingcouncil.org and click on grants, to check it out. Then bring your laptop on over on the 5th and Tammy will help you outline and put things together. Then….the FUN begins! We will have mini manicures, facials, chair massages, silent auction items, raffle items, snacks, a book sale and more from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Everyone deserves and needs a night that provides stress relief! We are asking that you get together with your fellow IRC members and donate a basket to silent auction. Anyone who donates a basket to the auction, will get into our Pampered Professionals night for free! What a deal! If you can’t donate anything, that’s okay, too. The event is $5 for members, $10 for nonmembers, at the door. Remember that we are a not-for-profit organization that provides workshops, professional development, parent and child literacy activities, free books and more! We can’t do that without your support! I look forward to seeing you on the 5th!
If you have a basket idea that you want to donate for the auction, please email me at trrc5@hotmail.com. All baskets are due by March 25th. Again, contact me at trrc5@hotmail.com to coordinate basket pick up, themes, etc.
I am attaching the flyer for our April 5th event. Please print it out, put it up and come on out on April 5th.
As I always do, I have been reading and want to recommend a wonderful read. The book “Out of My Mind” by Sharon Draper. I just finished it. It is a novel, at the 5th grade reading level, that is written from the point of view of an 11 year old girl with cerebal palsy. You will laugh, you will cry, you will want to read it to all of your students. It has changed the way I think and feel about students with disabilities. It’s what I would call a must read.
Happy Reading!

Greetings Two Rivers Members and Friends!
I would like to start off by wishing you and your family a healthy and happy holiday season. There are so many exciting reading events coming up in the new year and I hope you all get involved. First of all, beginning December 3rd, the Kankakee Historical Society is hosting the Gallery of Trees. Please take time to bring your classes, or your friends and family by to see the Two Rivers Reading Council Christmas Tree with the theme “The History of Christmas Around the World”. After you walk through and view the trees, you can vote for the tree you like the best. Please vote for our tree and help us win the competition this year!
After the holidays have passed and you are back in the swing of things, stop by Aurelios Pizzeria in Bourbonnais, IL, on January 26th fro 5 to 8 p.m. to enjoy a presentation by IRC members Gail Huizinga and Sue Johnson. Picture Storybooks: A Hidden Treasure is geared to teachers of grades 4 through 12 and will show you how to use story books in your classroom, with older students. We will be sending out a flier with registration details before Christmas, so you can get your colleagues together for this event. We will have raffle prizes and of course, you will receive a raffle ticket toward the Kindle drawing, in May, by coming to the program and if you bring a new member, you will get two tickets. Pizza dinner is included in the price of registration. More details to follow soon!
Other 2012 events include a Pampered Professionals event, a visit from Prairie State Award Winner, Robert Burleigh and a Teacher Resources garage sale. We are so excited for the new year! I am also looking into the possibility of partnering with the Daily Journal to sponsor a Newspapers in Education Parent/Child Workshop. Spread the word and get your colleagues excited about these upcoming events. Of course one of the BIGGEST events of 2012 will be the Illinois Reading Council’s Annual Conference “Literacy in the Land of Lincoln”. March 15th through the 17th in Springfield, IL. Many of our members will be presenting at the conference and your district’s money would be well spent sending you to this conference. You get a discounted registration fee by being a member of IRC and Two Rivers Reading Council. Be sure to keep your membership up to date! To register for the conference go to www.illinoisreadingcouncil.org.
In the most recent issue of the IRC Communicator, there is an article on Newspapers in Education. I know many of you use this program through The Daily Journal, and I wanted to point out some useful websites that will help you make the most of using newspapers in your classroom. Here are the links: www.instantserials.com, www.naafoundation.org (click on the curriculum page) and at www.illinois-nie.com there is an article on 300 ways to use newspapers in your classroom. Check it out!
Remember if your school or school district is having a program or open house, where you would like TRRC to come and pass out books or share information on literacy with parents, please give us about a month’s notice and all the details and we would be more than happy to help out.
As a final note, I would like to congratulate you on helping increase our membership by 14.5% since July, 2011. If we continue to increase to 20% our council will receive $200 to help continue our work with literacy.
Happy Holidays to you and your families! I hope you have time to share love, laughter and a good book with the ones you love.
Happy Reading,
Priscilla Dwyer
